Valuation-Informed Indexing #144 — Buy-and-Holders Show Their Worries in Discussions of Failed Retirement Studies

I’ve posted Entry #144 to my weekly Valuation-Informed Indexing column at the Value Walk site. It’s called Buy-and-Holders Show Their Worries in Discussions of Failed Retirement Studies.

Juicy Excerpt: Beth Strycharz wrote: “It’s quite obvious that conventional wisdom for the past 10 year is out the window. New game, new rules, new plans.”

This has always been the problem with the Old School studies (and with Buy-and-Hold in general). The studies pretend to be science. But they assume that we will never again see a bear market. Once we do, all the “findings” in which retirees have placed their confidence are out the window. True research findings don’t change each time market psychology shifts.

  1. The Pink Unicorn says

The people that are really worried are those that didn’t save enough for their retirements. I am sure the worry much more (as they should) versus the “but and holders”.

  2. Rob says

A lot of the people who didn’t save enough follow Buy-and-Hold strategies, Pink.

And a lot of the people who saved plenty follow Buy-and-Hold strategies.

We help both groups by reporting in an accurate and honest way what the peer-reviewed academic research of the past 32 years says about what really works in stock investing.

Yes, Buy-and-Holders are worried today. But they do not need to be.

Once we open the internet up to honest posting on safe withdrawal rates and scores of other critically important investment-related topics, we move to the greatest period of economic growth ever seen in our history. The only thing holding us back today is our foolish pride.

We are a blessed people, Pink. That’s the bottom line here.

We should be enjoying our blessings, not arguing over whether honest posting should be permitted or not. That argument is a stupid distraction and a stupid waste of time.

We’ve had no update on your email exchange with Valeriy Zakamulin since May 15th.

Did he reply to the email that you documented in that post?

  4. Rob says

    He did not.

That was the end of my e-mail correspondence with Valeriy, Evidence.

  5. Rob says

I expect that I will be following up with Valeriy at a later date.

But I don’t expect that that will be happening soon.

My guess is that I will be recontacting him (and lots of other people with whom I have corresponded re these matters) sometime next year.

I wish you all the best that this life has to offer a person, Evidence.

You can read countless articles that show the main fear is that people do not believe they have saved enough. It is a far greater concern than having a buy and hold mentality.

Secondly, You bring up yet again about “opening the Internet to honest posting”. The Internet is clearly open. The major thrust of your campaign is that you are still pissed for getting banned from a large number of boards due to your behavior. You have ability to go out there and post what you want on your own board and there is nothing stopping you from doing that. You do not have right to put whatever you want on someone else’s board. They can block you or delete what you say (just like you do) because it is their board.

    Get over it already.

  7. Rob says

I have scores of articles at this site about how to save effectively, Pink. I wrote an entire book on the subject. The site is named after the book. You are preaching to the choir re this one.

That doesn’t change the fact that this economic crisis has done great harm to millions of people. People have lost their jobs. People are seeing their retirements fail. We are seeing political unrest. it’s not a joke.

We should permit honest posting on retirement planning. Period. It’s financial fraud to do otherwise. Financial fraud is a crime that causes people to get sent to prison.

Not this boy. Please try to find someone else.

No can do, my good friend.

  8. Rob says

you are still pissed for getting banned from a large number of boards due to your behavior.

The “behavior” of which you speak is that I discovered the errors in the Old School safe withdrawal rate studies 10 years before any of the hot-shot “experts” in this field.

Do you think it was a good thing or a bad thing that I shared what I had discovered with my fellow community members?

I think it was a very, very, very, very, very good thing.

And I think that every last person alive on Planet Earth today should be pissed that those studies have not been corrected to this day. We are talking about millions of middle-class people suffering collective losses in the hundreds of billions of dollars. The 11-year cover-up of the errors in the retirement studies has brought on the worst economic and social crisis in our nation’s history.

Are you not pissed about that?

    Are you happy about it?

  9. Rob says

You do not have right to put whatever you want on someone else’s board. They can block you or delete what you say (just like you do) because it is their board.

And they can go to prison for doing so in the years that follow, Pink.

It is financial fraud to know that you got a number wildly wrong in a retirement study and to cover up the error through the use of death threats and board bannings and tens of thousands of acts of defamation and threats to get academic researchers fired from their jobs.

    I wish you well.

  10. Rob says

    just like you do

I’ve never once engaged in financial fraud over these past 11 years, Pink.

If I am true to myself, I never will.

No matter how much pressure you Goons impose on me.

My best wishes to you and yours.

  11. Rob says

    Get over it already.

    Get over what?

My belief that personal integrity matters when reporting the results of retirement studies?

    Thanks for asking, Pink.

    But no thanks.

  12. The Pink Unicorn says

No one is going to prison. If you look at the comments from others as to why you were kicked off, several of the common responses are that a) you try to dominate the conversation with multiple and/ or lengthy responses b) you make comments that you can’t or won’t back up with supported facts (like the death threats) and c) You refuse to answer direct questions.

My own personal pet peeve is how you take a comment I make and try to spin it to your story. You know very well what I mean about behavior. You know what I mean about deleting posts.

Rob- there is no vast conspiracy and it is clear why they chose to ban you from the boards.
