I’ve posted Entry #664 to my weekly Valuation-Informed Indexing column at the Value Walk site. It’s called Do the Buy-and-Holders Believe in Buy-and-Hold?
Juicy Excerpt: Most Buy-and-Holders would never engage in abusive posting tactics; a good number have spoken up in opposition to the abusive posting tactics. Most would tolerate honest posting re the peer-reviewed research if it were permitted at a site at which they regularly participated.
Many would even participate in such discussions from time to time. But most don’t feel much enthusiasm for the idea of such discussions being held. Most are not able to condone the behavior of the abusive posters but are not entirely unsympathetic to their goal of shutting down discussions of Shiller’s research findings.

Your broke. You are wasting your time in fantasyland. You need a job.
You’ve said that 10,000 times. I heard you the first 10,000 times. I don’t see any particular need for you to say it 10,000 additional times.
I’m thrilled beyond belief at what I have accomplished over the first 21 years of our discussions. When I was young, I had to choose a career path, as we all do. I looked at my talents and at what the world needs more of and determined that the best choice for me was journalism. This story of how discussion of the far-reaching how-to implications of Shiller’s Nobel-prize-winning research findings has been suppressed for 42 years is the most important journalsim project that has turned up in my lifetime. Permit honest discussion at every site and we can do away with bull markets and bear markets and economic crises! We all get to love better and fuller and richer and freer lives on the other side of this one. Gee, I think I’ll stick with it!
I hate the abusive stuff. Hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it. Obviously. But I LOVE the learning experiences that result from overcoming the abusive stuff. I look forward to the day when millions of people will be able to benefit from the learning experiences that thousands have alreadt expressed a deep appreciation for. I think it would be fair to say that ther good stuff ewe have seen over the first 21 years has been 20 times more good than the bad stuff we have seen has been bad. Just imagine how much good we will all be able to enjoy after the next Buy-and-Hold Crisis causes the owner of a large investing site to take pity on the American people and take action to rein in the abusive behavior of you Goons. Holy moly!
That’s where I am coming from re this one in any event, Anonymous.
My best and warmest wishes to you and yours.
Rob
“You’ve said that 10,000 times. I heard you the first 10,000 times. I don’t see any particular need for you to say it 10,000 additional times.”
Right back atcha Rob.
Fair enough.

“ I’m thrilled beyond belief at what I have accomplished over the first 21 years of our discussions. ”
Going broke and getting a divorce is not an accomplishment. Getting kicked off boards for bad behavior is not an accomplishment. Making a clown out of yourself is not an accomplishment………… or better said by a wise man: “ You go about it in a manner that is catastrophically unproductive by adding missionary zeal that inflates your importance and demeans others. The whole idea that there is a new school of Safe Withdrawal Rates reeks of personal aggrandizement.”
Do you read those words? “Catastrophically unproductive” and “missionary zeal” and “inflates your importance” and “demeans others” and “reeks of personal aggrandizement”. Have you reflected on that? Do you understand that he summed up what everyone else is thinking?
I believe that it was catastrophically unproductive for John Greaney to fail to correct the error in his retirement study when it was pointed out to him, Anonymous. Had he acknowledged the error on the afternoon of May 13, 2002, we would as a nation of people be 21 years further along in our understanding of how stock investing works in the real world than we are today.
Me agreeing to post dishonestly re safe withdrawal rates or any other critically important investment-related topic for the purpose of appeasing you Goons is not going to advance the ball one inch. That’s can’t be the answer. I believe that the answer is to open every site to honest posting re the last 42 years of research, without a single exception.
I know it is!
Rob
So you ignore any criticisms, despite your record of failure.
I think we are all in this together, Anonymous.
I had a telephone conversation with Scott Burns prior to the day when he made the comment you are referring to. He was highly excited about the new school of safe withdrawal rate analysis. He said that he was going to be back in touch with me (he was on a book tour at the time) and that he was going to write an article about the amazing research findings that John Walter Russell and I had produced,
Something obviously happened before that article appeared in print that scared him about what would happen to his career if he went ahead and published that article. But, if we were to open every site to honest posting re the peer-reviewed research, he would not be afraid anymore and he would be happy to do his part to help us all learn how to invest more effectively in the future than any of us believed was possible back in the Buy-and-Hold days.
Scott Burns is not the problem. He added to the problem with the words you cite. But he wants to be doing honest work in this field, as do so many others. The problem is the ban on honest posting re the research. That’s what needs to change. We all should feel free to do honest, research-supported work. There shouldn’t even be any controversy re that point.
My sincere take.
Rob
“ I think we are all in this together, Anonymous.”
No, we are not part of your little fantasy world. It is obvious that you are not telling the truth about Scott Burns. We saw his comments. To bad you didn’t listen.
Okay, Anonymous.
Rob
Does Scott Burns talk to you now? Nope. Does Wade Pfau talk to you now? Nope. Does anyone else from the investment community talk to you now? Nope.
No, we are not in this together. No, there is no one that supports you.
What will happen once we have opened every discussion board and blog on the internet to honest posting re the last 42 years of peer-reviewed research, without a single exception? Will there be even one person in this field NOT talking to me then?
Rob
