Let’s say that the next 20 years are the same as the past 20 years in that no one believes your story, no crash happens, you are still broke, etc.  Will you then admit you wasted all your time?

That alone would not do it. It would cause me to experience doubts. I would explore those doubts and see what people I respected were saying about the matter.

If there were still a Ban on Honest Posting re the peer-reviewed research, that would make it hard for me to develop confidence in Buy-and-Hold. I view the Ban on Honest Posting as a very negative sign for Buy-and-Hold. It’s not the way that people behave when they have confidence in their ideas.

And you have been told 10’s of thousands of times that there no error as the study did not require that. It is a retrospective study.

It is surprising that any board owner would let you post the same thing hundreds of times. Thousands of times is abusive. 10’s of thousands is a whole new level of horrible behavior and there was obviously no choice but to finally ban you since you refuse to have a normal discussion.

Greaney said that the study revealed the safe withdrawal rate. To determine what is safe, you need to look at the factors determining safety. Greaney ignoed the most important factor — the valuation level that applies on the day the retirement begins.

All that can be determined from a retrospective study that ignores the key factor affecting safety is the SURVIVING withdrawal rate. That’s what Greaney’s study reveals.

He should have corrected his study within 24 hours of becoming aware of the error he made in it. Had he done that, we would as a nation of people today be 22 years further along in our development of the Valuation-Informed Indexing concept and we would all be living fuller and freer and richer and better lives today as a result.

I recommended that we open every site on the internet to honest posting from the first day. Once we got the Greaney study corrected, it was my intention to take the discussion to every site on the internet and determine what it is within us that makes us want to deceive ourselves as to how stock investing works. Why has we for so long permitted our Get Rich Quick/Buy-and-Hold impulse to cause us so much financial harm.

Reading in the Get Rich Quick/Buy-and-Hold impulse that resides within each and every one of us is the future of investment analysis.

Or so Rob Bennett sincerely believes, you know?

Thanks for finally admitting that your message is out there. Not only that, any normal person would tell you that have a couple hundred times, it has gotten excessive. When it gets into the thousands, it is beyond irritating. It means people have seen it and answered it so many times, they are sick of it. Further, if you haven’t got any material traction after 10’s of thousands of posts, additional posts are not going to have any impact, regardless of how you spin the story.

Your problem is that you can’t drop the story because you have used it as a cover for not working. Same goes with the silly Greaney schtick you keep perpetuating. You will keep repeating it and no one will agree with you. You will just remain broke and alone. Good luck with that plan.

It should have taken all of one post pointing out the error in the Greaney retirement study (it lacks a valuation adjustment) to get it corrected. It hasn’t been corrected to this day. That’s the problem. It’s not my pointing out the error that is a problem. It’s Greaney’s failure to correct the study that is a problem.

There were people at the Motley Fool board who used that study for helping in planning their retirement. I know this. I was there.

No.  “Not working out” means that your retirement plan did not go as you said it would.  Do you think it is a good thing to have a depleted retirement account when you are 60’s?  Are you not responsible for that, just like everyone else is responsible for their own situations?

I’m responsible for it. But no reasonable person could have anticipated that I would see 22 years of abusive behavior, including a number of criminal acts, directed at me because I pointed out an error in a retirement study that some guy was pushing at a discussion board at which I posted. I mean, holy moly!

Am I not responsible for posting my sincere views on subjects that I address at discussion boards and blogs? It sure seems to me that I am. I have asked responsible parties to take effective action re you Goons, I have been doing that since June 2002. This situation is not my doing.

What are my responsibilities when I see a super weird situation like this? I sure don’t want to see the people of this country having to endure yet another Buy-and-Hold Crisis. Do you? What do you propose that I do about it? My take is that I should do everything in my power to see that every internet site is opened to honest posting re the last 43 years of peer-reviewed research in this field? Does that not make perfect sense? Do you have any better ideas re how to deal with this matter?

That’s where I’m coming from re this one, Anonymous.

So what you are saying is that YOU WERE WRONG when you made the prediction about 2015.

Things certainly did not play out as I expected they would. I said at the time I made the prediction that that often happens, that, while risk is increased when valuations are high, it is not possible to say precisely when price shifts will take place.

I don’t agree, Anonymous. I believe that I learn some little thing every day about a very important subject. I wouldn’t have been able to write the book that I am writing today in April 2002. Working up the courage to advance that famous post changed my life. I don’t regret it. I regret parts of it, obviously. Going down that path led me to times of great pain. But it also educated me about a very important subject and I hope to be able to give back to the world the things that I have learned in days to come. We’ll see, you know?

There were not personal friends. They were internet friends. I haven’t spoken to them since I left the board.

Do you think it would have been better if i had kept it zipped re the error in the Greaney retirement study? Do you think it would be a good idea to say that I now believe that the Greaney study contains a valuation adjustment afterall?

Setting aside the last 20+ years, what single accomplishment have you achieved in the last 5 years?

I had a huge accomplishment in early 2019, when I finished my article “Buy-and-Hold is Dangerous.” Finishing that article told me that I now possessed a sure enough grasp of what happened with Buy-and-Hold to be able to write a book about it.

I haven’t finsihed the book. But I am getting closer. My new target date is July 1, 2024. Each time I finish another chapter, that’s another accomplishment. And there are a lot of finished chapters! So making continued progress on the book is a regular thrill.

We need a book that tells people how stock investing works. The title of the book is “Investing for Humans.” That’s a bold title. Has there never before been a book showing humans how to invest in stocks? The incredible reality is thaat there has not ever been one. Shiller’s Nobel-prize-winning research showing that market timing is 100 percent required was not published until 1981. So, before that, we just didn’t know. And since 1981, we have as a nation of people been too afraid of upsetting the Buy-and-Holders to explore the far-reaching how-to implications of Shiller’s amazing research. When I saw Buy-and-Holders endorsing death threats to suppress discussion of the error in the Greaney retirement study, I concluded that someone needed to do something about this exceedingly strange situation and that the universe had selected me for the job. So I got down to business. And here I am!

Anything that move the book project along is a major achievement. And there have been a lot of those over the past five years and the past 20 years. My strong inclination is to just keep doing what works.

You said the same thing 5 years ago and 10 years ago and 15 years ago and 20 years ago. Look at how all that worked out for you.

Your interpretation of Shiller’s work led to an “amazing” broke retirement and an “amazing” divorce.

I think it worked out extremely well, Anonymous. I of course hate all the abusive stuff. I’ve said that thousands and thousands of times. But I LOVE the learning stuff. Working through the abusive stuff is the price that anyone who cares about getting stock investing right has to pay in the year 2023 to get to the learning stuff.

So be it, you know? I wish that it wasn’t so. But things are what they are. Getting stock investing right is important. We all need to do what we need to do to get us all to a much better place than we ever even knew existed back in the dreary Buy-and-Hold days. This is an amazing advance. Everyone alive in the United States today has the potential to be living a richer and fuller and freer and better life in coming days. All we need to do to make it happen is to open the package that Shiller presented to us 42 years ago. I vote for doing that.
