Bernstein told you to quit your job and to get out of stocks? Really?
He said in his book that the safe withdrawal rate at the top of the bubble was 2 percent. Greaney should have corrected the error in his study within 24 hours of the moment it was brought to his attention (the morning of May 13, 2002). People use retirement studies to plan retirements.
If we were all thinking clearly, there would not be one person in the United States disagreeing with any of this. There is clearly more than one. Why? Because Shiller was right. Investors are NOT 100 percent rational (as was assumed by the people who developed Buy-and-Hold). Investors are humans. Humans are CAPABLE of rationality. There are also prone to becoming highly IRRATIONAL at times.
The Bennett/Pfau research shows that market timing (the tool we use to make stock investing more rational) is 70 percent of what it takes to achieve long-term stock investing success. So advocacy of market timing should make up 70 percent of what we hear from investment advisers. That’s not Buy-and-Hold. That’s Valuation-Informed Indexing.

When did William Bernstein tell you to quit your job and pull your money out of the stock market? Why are you broke if you know how the market works?
Bernstein reported the safe withdrawal rate accurately in his book. He should have repeated what he said in his book when the question came up on the Bogleheads Forum. That way, we could have gotten the Greaney study corrected many years ago. Once that study was corrected, we could have moved on to all the other Buy-and-Hold retirement studies that got the numbers wrong because they failed to account for irrational exuberance. Then we could have moved on to asset allocation questions and risk management questions. We could have replaced Buy-and-Hold with Valuation-Informed Indexing. We wouldn’t have a CAPE value of 29 today, we wouldn’t be priced for another Buy-and-Hold Crisis within the next year or two or three and we would all be living better and fuller and richer lives today than we ever imagined possible during the Buy-and-Hold years.
That’s how it works in every field of human endeavor other than the investment advice field. Humankind didn’t come to Planet Earth with knowledge of everything that any of us will ever need to know. So the people who developed Buy-and-Hold made a mistake (Shiller’s Nobel-prize-winning research was not available at the time). If we were all thinking clearly, we would all have wanted that mistake to be corrected as quickly as humanly possible. What possible benefit is there to having retirement studies that get the numbers wildly wrong? That’s nuts. I mean, come on.
The problem today is that it doesn’t just make the Buy-and-Holders feel bad for people to learn about their original mistake, it makes them feel really, really, really bad for people to learn about the 42-year cover-up. In another year, it will be a 43-year cover-up. Then a 44-year cover-up. It can never get better. It can only get worse. I believe that the error should have been corrected as soon as it was discovered (in 1981). Given that 42 years have already passed, it should be corrected by the close of business today. Continuing the cover-up hurts each and every one of us and helps absolutely no one.
Bernstein did a wonderful thing by reporting the safe withdrawal rate accurately in his hook. But that obviiously wasn’t enough to get the job done. It was his fear of what you Goons would do to him if he did honest work in this field that caused him to keep it zipped when the discussions turned up at the Bogleheads Forum. We all need to pull together and support each other when you Goons attack us and then the problem is solved. Then Bernstein would feel better and I would feel better and Wade Pfau would feel better and Larry Swedroe would feel better and Bill Shultheis would feel better and on and on and on. It’s a win/win/win/win/win.
If we are not going to permit people to discuss the last 42 years of peer-reviewed research, we should shut down all of the peer-reviewed journals. Those journals still exist. That signals to me that as a nation of people we still care what the peer-reviewed research teaches us about how stock investing works, no matter how afraid we are of what you Goons will do to us if we post honestly. I think that the current state of play is an unstable situation. We can’t have peer-reviewed journals and not permit people to discuss what we learn from reading what is published in them. I believe that we may all come to the realization that we need to open every site to honest posting in the days following the next Buy-and-Hold Crisis. I sure hope that that happens. We’ll see, you know?

Yes, I believe that the stock market works the same as every other market that has ever existed. Price discipline is by far the most important thing. From time to time we forget that that’s the case with the stock market because our Get Rich Quick urge caused us to place great value on the creation of trillions of dollars of irrational exuberance. When that happens, we all pay a terrible price.
I believe that we should permit honest posting re the last 42 years of peer-reviewed research in this field.

Was your ex-wife a drug addict, gambling addict or sex addict. Just asking since you brought it up and made the claim.
My claim was that we all have the potential to become such things. It is in our nature to engage in self-destructive behavior.
The nistake that the Buy-and-Holders made was to assume the oppotiste, that we are all always 100 percent rational when buying stocks. If that really were so, market timing/price discipline really would not be required becase stocks would always be priced properly. It was a huge advance when Shiller showed with uis Nobel-prizr-winning research that none of that is even a tiny bit true, that irrational exuberance is a very real thing. So of course market timing is always 100 percent required to combat it.
One of the things that helps us all not to become drug addicts or gambling addicts or sex addicts is that it is common for people to point out the negatives of these sorts of self-destructive behavior. The problem in the investment advice realm is that the Buy-and-Holders go nuts whenever anyone points out how destructive it is to create a mountain of irrational exuberance. The Buy-and-Holders count irrational exuberance gains as if they were real. So they don;t like it when people like me tell invesors that they need to subtract their irrational gains when calculating the safe withdrawal rate.
Think how many more drug addicts we would have if there were a time when people had come to believe that a drug addiction is a very good thing — that it makes you feel good or some such nonsense. Then, when it was discovered through subsequent study that drug addiction is actually a bad thing, these people sent out goon squads to threaten to murder the loved ones of those who pointed out the realities, Drug addiction is a bad thing and should be discovered. Just as failing to pratice market timing/price discipline is a bad thing and should be discouraged.
If we all practiced market timing, there could never be another bull market. If there never was another bull market, there could never be another bear maarket, If there never was another bear market, there could never be another Buy-and-Hold Crisis. It all ties together. We should be permitting honest posting re the peer-reviewed reserch at every site, without a single exception.

To get safe withdrawal rates right, you have to understand how stock investing works. And, if you understand stock investing risk, you understand why market timing (considering price when setting your stock allocation) is so essential. It was by seeing the error in the Buy-and-Hold retirement studies that I came to see that the idea that market timing doesn’t work is the product of a mistaken understanding of how stock investing works that was exposed by Shiller’s research.

Like I said, you are calling them liars…..yet it is also a conspiracy since they are all in on it.
We all have a Get Rich Quick/Buy-and-Hold urge residing within us, Anonymous. That much is certainly so.
You could say that we’re all drug addicts or that we are all gambling addicts or that we are all sex addicts because we all have the potential to fall prey to those horrible addictions. The Bennett/Pfau research shows that it is nothing inherent in the nature of stocks that requires that they be a high-risk asset class. The risk for which stocks have become known over the years is the product of the Get Rich Quick/Buy-and-Hold impulse that resides within us all. Now that we have 42 years of peer-reviewed research showing us how to overcome that urge (through market timing/price discipline), the days of risky stock investing are over once we pull together as a nation of people to open every discussion board and blog to honest posting re the peer-reviewed research, without a single exception. I recommend doing this by the close of buisiness today, if not a good bit sooner.

If you were confident in your market timing scheme, you wouldn’t keep attacking the buy and holders. If you were confident in your market timing scheme, you would keep making up death threat accusations. If you were confident in your market timing scheme, you would keep banning posts at your website. If you were confident in your market timing scheme, you wouldn’t lie about all the successful outcomes from buy and hold.
I believe that the Buy-and-Holders are great people. I like them as individuals. I want to be friends with them. I don’t agree with them on the market timing/price discipline question. I think that they made a mistake re that one because Shiller’s Nobel-prize-winning research had not yet been published at the time Buy-and-Hold was being developed.
I have no problem with people advocating Buy-and-Hold because I believe that the people advocating it sincerely believe in it and there are obviously many people who want to hear about it. I have a big problem with efforts to suppress the discussion of Valuation-Informed Indexing. The reality is that there are today two schools of academic thought re how stock investing works. I want Valuation-Informed Indexing to grow in popularity. That’s not going to happen unless the people who believe in it feel free to openly share their thoughts at every discussion board and blog.
Stocks are an amazing investment class. Since Buy-and-Hold recommends investing in stocks, it has provided those who follow it a measure of success. But the Bennett/Pfau research shows that a decision to avoid maret timing/price discipline never adds and always subtracts. So I don’t believe that that particular aspect of the Buy-and-Hold experience has ever contributed to an investor’s success.
Valuation-Informed Indexing offers all of the benefits of Buy-and-Hold (since everything except the market timing thing checks out and has been incorporated into Valuation-Informed Indexing concept) without the serious negative of the idea that market timing/price discipline might not always be 100 percent required for every investor. Valuation-Informed Indexing is really just an improved version of BUy-and-Hold, a Buy-and-Hold reformed to include the amazing findings of the last 42 years of peer-reviewed research.
