I’ve posted Entry #56 to my weekly Investing: The New Rules column at the Death by 1,000 Papercuts site. It’s called Why Can’t We Be Friends With Those Who Follow Different Investment Philosophies?
Juicy Excerpt: I can still hear the concern in Brian’s voice when he would turn to me and say: “Rob, I know all about this historical data jizz-jazz you are always going on about. I just want to be sure that you understand that you are nuts. I would not feel good about myself if I didn’t point that out. You do know that you are nuts, right?”
And I would say “Yes, Brian, I get it that I am nuts.”
The great thing about it is that, years later when stocks crashed just like the entire historical record told us they were going to, Brian was man enough to call me and acknowledge that perhaps I wasn’t so nuts after all.

Having friends with different investment philosophies is something I can deal with. Something I can’t deal with is being friends with those who live paycheck to paycheck. Not those who don’t have any choice in this matter, but the ones that choose to do this because they feel they must blow all of their money on frivolous stuff just because they can, with no thought to the future. Especially the kind of people that choose to live like this and have families, which I see as having other people that depend and rely on you.
